The Dead Microphones is the sequel to the The Lure of The Red Dragon. It starts in the same vein, often humorous, describing life and how to live in China for a foreigner and unravels further mysteries, confusion, and pleasures, of living in the most populous country on earth. The interwoven love story also continues.

Halfway through the book, as in real life, the shock events in Wuhan and of COVID-19 are described by the author, who remained in China, his home, during this period. Analysed are different approaches to events by China and other countries and of global successes but also catastrophic failures of leadership, particularly in the United States,

Finally, there is a section on what a post-COVID-19 world might mean for both China and its relationship with the rest of the world. It provides many insights into modern Chinese life, thinking and culture, and offers some rays of hope as to how China can find its place in the emerging new world order.
